Projects

leihs

A borrowing/lending/inventory management system written in Ruby on Rails. It’s Free Software under GPLv3. See its Trac page.

What I did: Project manager, a tiny bit of development, translations German/English/Swiss-German

MAdeK

A media archive system for (art) universities and anyone who needs a metadata-aware web-based digital media library.. It’s Free Software under GPLv3, check out the project Trac.

What I did: Technical project manager/technical consulting, translations German/English/Swiss-German

NRK Scraper

NRK Scraper is a little screen scraper that takes the Norwegian national broadcaster’s Internet TV services and extracts the URLs of the streams for you. That way, you can play them in your favorite streaming-capable video player, such as VLC or Mplayer, and don’t have to use NRK’s very heavy and Windows-centric website.

The project is only just starting, but the code is working already and I’m enjoying happy fullscreen NRK.no TV evenings.

What I did: The dweeb who wrote the initial code.

ithelp

A trouble ticket and IT department helper app in Ruby on Rails. It’s released under Affero GPLv3 at its own Trac. It’s quite ZHdK-centric at the moment, if we have time we will make it a bit more generic in the future.

What I did:Some CSS (sorry!), translation, project management

Bergtagung

The Bergtagung is a meeting of open minds in the Swiss Alps. We aim to provide a kind of melting pot for the communities that shape the Free Software and the Free Culture movements. It takes place irregularly.

What I did: Initiator and organizer.

Lincomp

A little shop for brand-name PCs with preinstalled Ubuntu GNU/Linux. More information.

What I did: I’m the poor sod who’s running this.

Über Gnus und Pinguine

A group of people organizing real-world meetings and events around Free Software in Switzerland. Founding members Olivia Suter and I are happy to welcome more contributors. Some of our more prestigious projects include the official Ubuntu release parties for Ubuntu 8.04 and 8.10 in Zürich, the monthly FOSS users afterwork get-together and the monthly OSS presentations on a Saturday. Very, very free!

What I did: Initiator/president/organizer.

High Density

Description: A video podcast by Shane M. Coughlan and me. We try to break down complicated concepts from the fields of technology and politics into easy to understand, single-topic chunks. But that doesn’t mean that the information we present lacks depth, because explanations and additional information are overlaid on the actual video as text, so that you probably have to rewatch the (short, 10 minute) clips in order to catch all the information.

This project is dead. We might revive it at some point. Bring the defibrilator, please.

What I did: Co-creator, co-host, audio/video editor (using only Free Software, that was one of the goals!)

Exterminate all the Brutes

Description: A Free Software project in Malawi, Africa. Initially, Alex Antener performed a systems migration of the University of Malawi: The Polytechnic from their existing legacy systems to a GNU/Linux based solution, thereby enabling the university to cope with spam and security problems as well as signifcantly saving costs.

Two years later, in 2006, he continued with phase two of the project, in which he distributed 25 thin clients at the university as well as deploying modern server systems for students and staff. This system is running Edubuntu GNU/Linux.

What I did: Some coaching on the software to pick while Alex was still here in Switzerland, and a little remote support when he was in Malawi.
